What Is APA?

APA is an acronym that means American Psychological Association. This is one of the most common outline format next to the MLA format. APA is a broad format and can be divided into six parts. These parts are the page layout, the title page, abstract, heading, APA in-text citation, and the APA format reference page.

How Do You Apply APA Format in Writing

In order to understand the basic elements of an APA format, you must also understand how you are able to apply it in writing. Apart from that, it is also best to be able to get to know the elements of an APA format in order for you to see to it that you have applied all of it in writing.

Step 1: APA Page Layout

Starting with the APA page layout, you must make sure that the document you are going to be making should be double spaced. The margins for all sides of the paper should be an inch, nothing less. As for the font size and the font style, the font should be 12 and the font style TNR or Arial. This is for any and all documents written.

Step 2: APA Title Page

The title page should include the title of the paper, the author’s name, and the author’s institutional affiliation. It should also include a running head, which is a shortened version of the paper’s title, and a page number in the top right corner.

Step 3: The APA Abstract

For the APA abstract, this is where you place the brief summary of your document. Your abstract must not go over the required maximum number of words. Your abstract must also include the purpose of your study, the results, methodology, and conclusions. All of which would be around 250 words maximum.

Step 4: The APA Headings

For an APA heading, this format requires a five levels of headings. Each level of heading shows the different level of importance. This also includes the paragraphs that you have written.

Step 5: In Text and References

APA in text citations and references are important. For the in text citations, you must follow the format of the author’s last name and the year of publication. All of which should be found in the text. An example for this would be (Jones, 2020). For the reference page, cite all the sources and organize them in alphabetical order. Author’s last names should be in alphabetical order and includes the entire publication information.
