Exxon Mobil Mission Statement
An evaluation of dual-challenge energy infrastructure, carbon capture scaling, and global commodity
optimization
Introduction
Exxon Mobil Corporation, headquartered in Spring, Texas, stands as one of the world's largest publicly traded
international energy and chemical conglomerates. Formed by the historic 1999 merger of Exxon and Mobil
(both direct descendants of John D. Rockefeller's Standard Oil), the enterprise operates a fully integrated
energy value chain. This vast network spans upstream exploration and production (including major plays in
the Permian Basin and Guyana), midstream transport systems, and a massive downstream refining and
product solutions pipeline. Under its modern operational structure, ExxonMobil combines high-volume
chemical manufacturing with accelerated capital projects focused on lower-emission technologies, carbon
capture systems, and hydrogen energy infrastructures.
Mission Statement
ExxonMobil’s formal corporate mandate addresses what the company refers to as the "dual challenge"—
meeting the economic demand for global energy while simultaneously addressing climate risks:
"To provide affordable, reliable energy and chemical products necessary for human progress, while
managing the risks of climate change and transitioning to a lower-emissions future."
This mission avoids a binary shift away from oil and gas, framing fossil energy and carbon reduction as
parallel paths. Strategy experts evaluate this mission through three pillars:
Powering "Human Progress":
ExxonMobil treats dense energy access as the primary foundation for
global economic development, industrial manufacturing, and rising living standards, positioning its
traditional commodity extraction operations as a long-term economic necessity.
Affordability and Reliability at Scale:
Operating through volatile macroeconomic supply cycles requires
high asset performance. ExxonMobil scales deep technical engineering pipelines and regional
manufacturing hubs to keep consumer energy prices highly competitive.
Lower-Emissions Technology Focus:
The brand addresses climate risks through structural mitigation
rather than simple product abandonment. This includes multi-billion-dollar investments via its Low Carbon
Solutions engine, targeting heavy-industrial decarbonization, deep-subsurface carbon capture and storage
(CCS), hydrogen, and lithium production.
