or those of you who don't know me, I'm Rachel — Emma's sister-in-law. My husband Jake
has spent years telling me stories about his little sister. Today, I finally get to tell a few
of mine.
I met Emma when she was sixteen. She was in the middle of a growth spurt, she had just
trimmed her own bangs with kitchen scissors — they were slightly crooked — and she told
me, very seriously, that I should call her “Em,” because that was what the cool people did.
She was not cool. She was wonderful. And there's a difference.
Over the years I've watched her grow into the person she is now: the one who remembers
everyone's birthday, who shows up at your door with soup when you're sick, who makes
friends with strangers in every checkout line. She's the first person I call when something
good happens — and the first person I text when something doesn't.
Then Daniel came along. And, as sisters-in-law do, I was a little suspicious of anyone who
seemed that good with the family dog, that good at assembling flat-pack furniture, and that
good at making Emma laugh. It felt like too much.
But then I watched Emma with him. And I understood. She laughs louder. She's braver when
he's beside her. She's more fully herself — and I've learned that's the truest sign of love there
is.
Daniel, I want you to know something. Emma talked about you for months before we ever
met you. And every time she said your name, her whole face changed. I had never seen that
happen to her — not once. So I knew, long before I'd said hello to you, that you were her
person.
