What Is Formal Writing?

Formal writing is a form of writing which maintains form and structure through the entirety of its content. It follows the common introduction–body–conclusion format of most literature. Formal writing is used often for business, academic, and scientific correspondence and literature. Abstract writing, on the other hand, is a form of writing which follows no structure or form. • Brainstorm ideas – Try to come up with a list of examples regarding your topic for writing.
  • Free-write – Grab a pen and paper and jot down anything that comes into mind regarding your topic or subject
  • Create flow charts – The use of flow charts to show relationships between ideas for your topic is effective in creating the sequence or the train of thought for each point to the topic.

What Is the Purpose of Writing?

Commonly, when we write something it is for the purpose of not forgetting and having a concrete and physical evidence of that thought. It acts as an aid to our ever fickle memory that tends to fade over time. Writing, though, has four basic purposes that it serves, namely:

Narration – Termed as narrative writing, the purpose of this type of writing is to tell a story and well, everybody just loves a good story. This type of writing is often appealing to most since almost everyone enjoys telling and hearing stories. A narrative arranges events in a chronological order citing a clear beginning, middle, and end or conclusion. Now that rings a bell.

Exposition – Otherwise known as expository writing which aims to explain or inform. (come to think of it, it does sound eerily familiar to this article) Literary examples of which include news reports, informative essays, instruction manuals, and research papers.

DescriptionDescriptive writing involves an artist (you) painting a picture with words (writing). Examples include that of advertisements or photo captions. Descriptive writing offers you the feel of all the senses without you being actually there or experiencing the real thing.

PersuasionPersuasive writing is directed at the purpose of convincing a reader to the writer’s point of view. This type of writing takes a lot of logical thinking and technical skill, together with knowledge of the subject and the strong drive to get the message through the reader. Was the name Hitler ever mentioned anywhere along the lines of being king of persuasion? Thankfully not (for all our sakes).

Importance of Writing

For some, writing is merely the act of lifting a pen or marker and scribbling away at some forlorn piece of paper. They are sadly mistaken. Writing forms an integral part of our learning and continued development.

Besides the basics of writing, being—

  • a means of communication in both personal and work related matters
  • a form of expression of our being
  • a tool in preserving our ideas and memories
  • a means to entertain others with our ideas

—what writing does is also to

  • develop our capability to combine content or information, process, and skills. This relates to what we do with content from information, then processing our thoughts in conjunction with our motor skills to write.
  • help us adapt or work our way through problems by relating a means to an end. A beginning to a conclusion—the basic format for writing.
  • improve our decision-making skills.
  • find logic in situations and poses questions in connection to probing maverick ideas or solutions.

Why Writing Is Part of Our Daily Life

Writing forms part of our daily life. It may be not you doing the writing but everyday lives are made complete because of writing. Here are a few scenarios in everyday life where writing is involved:

  • Taking a bath – How do you think water gets to your tap without someone from the water department typing in (still technically writing) water station pump schedules and maintenance schedules?
  • Eating – Do you think food gets to your plate without a ton of paperwork from the producers to merchants to the supermarkets?
  • Clocking in and out of work – How do you think your pay gets computed and approved?
  • Payment of bills – Right. Paperwork.
  • Entertainment – How ever does one survive in this industry without writing stuff?

In conclusion, writing empowers us to go beyond the limits of human comprehension. It envisions a future with no bounds, just limitless possibilities. Writing frees us from the chains that bind us and provides us with tools we can work with in shaping our future or visiting our past.
