Good morning, everyone. Think back to your first years in school. You probably learned
how to read, write, solve mathematical problems, and follow instructions. But can you
remember being asked to draw something that did not have a right or wrong answer? Or to
invent your own solution to a problem simply because you were curious? Today, I want to
explore those questions through
Do Schools Kill Creativity?
, a famous TED talk delivered by
British author and educator Sir Ken Robinson in 2006. Robinson's talk examines the
relationship between education and creativity and asks whether traditional education systems
give creative abilities the same importance they give academic subjects.
Robinson begins his talk with a humorous observation about children and their willingness
to take risks. Children are naturally curious, and they often experiment without worrying too
much about making mistakes. For Robinson, this willingness to try is closely connected to
creativity. He defines creativity in practical terms as the process of having original ideas that
have value. In other words, creativity is not simply making something unusual. It involves
generating possibilities and developing ideas that can be useful or meaningful.
One of the central points in Robinson's talk is that children have different abilities, but
education systems have historically tended to place greater value on certain academic
subjects. Robinson describes an education hierarchy in which mathematics and languages
often receive a high level of attention, followed by subjects such as the humanities, while the
arts may receive less emphasis. His argument is not that mathematics, science, or language
are unimportant. Rather, he questions why educational systems sometimes treat particular
forms of intelligence as more valuable than others. A student who is talented in music, dance,
theater, design, or visual art may possess important abilities even if those abilities are not

became a successful choreographer. According to Robinson, when she was a child, teachers
were concerned because she could not sit still and appeared unable to concentrate in class. A
specialist eventually recognized that she needed movement and encouraged her to attend a
dance school. The story is used to demonstrate a broader point: behavior that looks like a
problem in one environment may be an expression of ability in another. When educational
systems focus heavily on sitting still, following instructions, and producing standardized
answers, some forms of talent may be overlooked.
Robinson also places modern education in historical context. He explains that mass
education systems developed in connection with the needs of industrial societies. Academic
subjects were often organized according to ideas about which forms of knowledge would lead
to professional careers. However, the nature of work has changed significantly. Modern
economies rely on technology, communication, design, entrepreneurship, scientific discovery,
and many other forms of problem-solving. Because of these changes, Robinson argues that
education should reconsider how it identifies and develops talent.
Another important idea in the talk is the role of mistakes. Creativity requires
experimentation, and experimentation sometimes produces failure. If students are taught that
mistakes are something to avoid at all costs, they may become less willing to take intellectual
risks. This does not mean that accuracy is unimportant. In mathematics, science, medicine,
engineering, and many other fields, accuracy can be essential. The point is that learning also
requires exploration. A student may need to make several unsuccessful attempts before
discovering a better approach. A classroom that allows thoughtful experimentation can
therefore create space for creativity without abandoning standards.
It is also important to understand what Robinson's title means. When he asks whether
schools kill creativity, he is not saying that every school destroys creativity or that teachers are
against creative students. In fact, many teachers actively encourage creativity through projects,
discussion, arts programs, experiments, and open-ended assignments. The question is about
the structure of education as a whole. What do schools reward? What kinds of achievement
receive the most attention? How are students tested? And do students have enough
opportunities to develop abilities that cannot easily be measured by a standardized exam?
These questions remain relevant because creativity is not limited to artists. Scientists use
creativity when they develop hypotheses. Engineers use it when they design solutions.
Entrepreneurs use it when they identify opportunities. Doctors and nurses may use creative
thinking when dealing with unusual situations. Writers, programmers, architects, teachers, and
researchers all need the ability to consider possibilities and connect ideas. For that reason,
creativity can be understood as a broad human ability rather than a special talent reserved for
people working in the arts.
There is also an important balance to consider. Education needs both knowledge and
creativity. Students cannot effectively solve many problems without learning the basic
concepts, skills, and information that allow them to understand those problems. At the same
time, knowledge becomes more powerful when students can use it in new ways. A strong
educational experience can therefore combine structured learning with opportunities for
exploration. Students can learn established facts while also asking questions, designing
projects, discussing different interpretations, and developing their own solutions.
More than a decade after Robinson's 2006 TED talk, the central question remains useful:
are we giving young people enough opportunities to discover what they are capable of doing?
The answer is not simply to remove structure from education. Instead, it is to recognize that
students learn in different ways and that intelligence can appear in many forms. Creativity can
be encouraged when students are allowed to be curious, make thoughtful mistakes, work
across subjects, and see connections between what they learn and the world around them.
So, do schools kill creativity? Robinson's talk does not give us a simple yes-or-no answer.
Instead, it asks us to examine the assumptions behind education. If schools value only a
narrow range of abilities, some students may never discover their strengths. If schools combine
knowledge with curiosity, discipline with experimentation, and academic learning with
opportunities to create, they can help more students develop their full potential. Every student
enters a classroom with possibilities that may not be obvious at first. The challenge for
education is not simply to fill students with information, but to help them discover what they can
do with that information. If we can make room for both knowledge and imagination, perhaps the
better question is not whether schools kill creativity, but how schools can help it grow. Thank
