Several

implications
follow
.
First
,
the
starting
point
should
be
the
business
question
,
not
the
software
;
firms
that
began
with
a
specific
problem
,
such
as
shrinking
margins
or
excess
stock
,
con

verted
analytics
into
outcomes
far
more
reliably
.
Second
,
designating
a
data
owner
,
even
on
a
part
-
time
basis
,
proved
decisive
in
sustaining
momentum
.
Third
,
modest
and
consistent
investment
pro
-
duced
better
returns
than
occasional
large
-
scale
initiatives
.
The
limitations
of
this
study
should
be
acknowledged
.
The
analysis
relied
on
a
limited
number
of
cases
and
on
self
-
reported
performance
figures
,
which
may
overstate
causal
relationships
,
and
a
longer
observation
period
would
be
required
to
confirm
that
the
improvements
are
sustained
over
time
.
Overall
,
the
evidence
supports
the
conclusion
that
data
analytics
,
applied
pragmatically
and
consis

tently
,
materially
improves
decision
quality
in
small
retail
businesses
,
and
that

and
