This study examined the relationship between daily physical activity and academic performance
among high school students. The central hypothesis was that students who engaged in at least thirty
minutes of moderate exercise each school day would demonstrate higher average grades and improved
classroom concentration compared with students who did not. The findings of the study support this
hypothesis.
Across the eight-week observation period, the 142 participating students who met the daily activity
recommendation achieved a mean grade point average 0.42 points higher than their less active peers. Teacher-
reported engagement scores were also significantly higher in the active group, and this effect remained consistent
when controlling for prior academic performance and socioeconomic background.
These results suggest that schools should treat physical education as an academic priority rather than an
optional supplement. Even modest increases in daily movement, such as a brief walk between classes or an active
recess, appear to be associated with measurable gains in attention and achievement.
Several limitations should be noted. The study relied on self-reported activity data, and the eight-week
timeframe is too short to establish long-term effects. In addition, the sample was drawn from a single school
district, which limits the generalizability of the findings to other regions and age groups.
Future research should examine the causal mechanisms underlying this relationship, including the roles of
sleep quality and stress reduction, and should track students over a full academic year. Despite these limitations,
the evidence is consistent enough to conclude that daily physical activity is a simple, low-cost intervention that
can meaningfully support academic success.
