The American Dream Essay Introduction
The American Dream has traditionally been associated with the belief that individuals can achieve
opportunity, prosperity, and upward social mobility through effort and determination. Although the
phrase has been interpreted in different ways throughout American history, its meaning has been
closely connected to ideals of economic independence, homeownership, education, and personal
advancement. These aspirations have also been shaped by persistent inequalities involving race, class,
and access to opportunity, making the American Dream both an influential ideal and a subject of
debate. Examining its development reveals a tension between the promise of equal opportunity and the
social and economic conditions that can make that promise difficult to achieve. The American Dream
therefore remains a significant lens through which to consider success, inequality, mobility, and the
changing meaning of opportunity in the United States.
