Toni Cade Bambara’s “The Lesson,” first published in 1972 in the collection *Gorilla, My
Love*, follows Sylvia, a young girl from a poor neighborhood in New York City, as she and
several other children are taken by Miss Moore to an upscale Manhattan toy store. Miss
Moore wants the children to recognize the economic inequalities that shape their lives,
and the expensive toys in the store force Sylvia to confront differences in wealth that she
has previously treated as ordinary. Sylvia initially resists Miss Moore’s lesson and views
the outing with suspicion, but the experience gradually challenges her assumptions about
opportunity and fairness. Through Sylvia’s first-person narration, the contrast between the
children’s neighborhood and the toy store, and Miss Moore’s emphasis on economic
awareness, Bambara examines poverty, inequality, education, and the development of
social consciousness.
