Goldwater Johnson Administration Persuasive Speech
Choose the way of this present Administration and you make real the prospect of an America
unarmed and aimless in the face of militant Communism around the world.
Communism is the only great threat to the peace!
A tolerable peace, in other words, must follow victory over Communism. We have been fourteen
years trying to bury that unpleasant fact. It cannot be buried and any foreign policy that ignores it will
lead to our extinction as a nation.
The Republican party is the party of peace. We are the party of peace because we believe that
peace comes through strength and preparedness.
This Administration uses the outmoded and unfair military draft system for social schemes as well
as military objectives. Republicans will end the draft altogether, and as soon as possible! That I
promise you!
Republicans understand that the military forces need trained volunteers who make the military
service a career. Republicans understand that the purpose of the military forces is not social, or
political—it is to help keep the peace of the world.
To use military services for political and social schemes—as this Administration does—is to drift
closer to war on an ebbing tide of military strength.
We must have the courage to face the facts. We must have the courage to speak plainly about the
dangers that confront us. We must have the courage to maintain the strength necessary to preserve
our freedom and our peace.
The choice before the American people is clear. We can continue on the present course, or we can
choose a new direction based upon strength, responsibility, and freedom.
