Chapter 1: Foundations of a Rationalist
I was born in San Francisco in 1916. My early life was shaped by the values of hard work and
the belief that problems—no matter how complex—could be solved through rigorous
analysis. At Berkeley, I fell in love with economics and philosophy. Later, at Harvard Business
School, I learned the 'Statistical Control' methods that would define my career. During
World War II, I applied these techniques to the Army Air Forces, optimizing the efficiency of
our bombing raids against Japan. It was a grim necessity, one that introduced me early to the
terrible math of war.
