Introduction: The View from
the Top of the Hill
y life has been a lot like a snowball. If you find enough wet
snow and a really long hill, the compounding effect is almost
magical. I started early, and I've been rolling that snowball
for a long time. People often ask me about the money, but for me, it was
always about the game—the numbers, the logic, and the challenge of
seeing something clearly that others missed.
I've spent my life obsessed with the internal scorecard. Most people live
by an external scorecard—what the world thinks of them. But I learned
early on from my father, Howard, that what matters is what you think of
yourself when you look in the mirror. This is my story, told in my own
words, of how a boy from Omaha who loved collecting bottle caps
ended up building Berkshire Hathaway.
