PROLOGUE: THE DRAGON

I hate tennis. I hate it with a dark and secret passion, and yet I am out

here, hours before dawn, hitting ball after ball. My father, Mike, is behind the

'Dragon'—the ball machine he modified to fire balls at me with terrifying

speed. 'Hit it harder, Andre!' he screams. To him, the path to the American

dream is paved with a million balls hit before breakfast. This is Las Vegas.

This is my childhood.

CHAPTER 1: BOLLETTIERI’S PRISON

By thirteen, I was shipped off to Florida, to Nick Bollettieri’s Tennis

Academy. It felt like a labor camp. We were soldiers in denim and earrings,

products of a system designed to churn out winners at the cost of childhoods.

I rebelled—the Mohawk, the liner, the attitude. It was a mask. If I couldn't

choose to be there, I would choose how I looked while I suffered.

CHAPTER 2: THE IMAGE AND THE

REALITY

In the late 80s, I became a sensation before I became a champion. 'Image

is Everything,' the Canon ads said. It was a curse. I was the rock-and-roll

rebel of tennis, but inside, I was crumbling. I reached Grand Slam finals—

Paris, New York—only to lose them because I didn't believe I deserved to

win. I was playing a character I didn't even like.

Wimbledon 1992. They said a baseliner like me, a 'desert rat,' could

plummeted to 141. In a moment of absolute despair, I took crystal meth. It

was a low point that should have been the end. I lied to the ATP to avoid a

ban, a secret that weighed on me for years. I had to decide: quit or start over

from the very bottom.

I started playing Challengers—the minor leagues of tennis. I found Gil

Roland Garros, not for the trophy, but for the journey back from the abyss.

anymore—I respected what it had made of me. I walked off the court for the

last time, finally, truly open.
