Foundation: From New York to

Engineering

y journey began in Huntington, New York. Growing up in the

1950s and 60s, I was drawn to the logic of engineering. My father

was an aerospace engineer, and he instilled in me a sense of

wonder about how things worked. I pursued my bachelor's in electrical

engineering at Villanova University, where I met my wife, Andrea. It was at

Villanova that I realized that engineering wasn't just about building gadgets;

it was about solving complex problems for the betterment of society. I

continued my studies at SUNY Stony Brook, earning my master's and

doctorate, focusing on computer science—a field that was then in its relative

infancy.

The Move West: Arrival at

Stanford

n 1977, I arrived at Stanford University as an assistant professor. At the

time, Stanford was a growing powerhouse, but it hadn't yet become the

global epicenter of Silicon Valley as we know it today. I was joining the

Department of Electrical Engineering, surrounded by giants like Fred

Terman's legacy. My early years were spent in the lab, focused on computer

architecture. I was obsessed with the idea of making processors faster and

more efficient. This led to the development of RISC (Reduced Instruction Set

Computer) architecture, a breakthrough that challenged the prevailing

wisdom of the time. It was a period of intense intellectual ferment and the

beginning of my lifelong tie to the Farm.

The Entrepreneurial Itch: MIPS

Computer Systems

nnovation at Stanford has always had a porous boundary with the

industry. In 1984, I took a leave of absence to co-found MIPS Computer

Systems. This was my first real lesson in leadership outside the ivory

tower. We were commercializing the RISC technology we had developed in

the lab. I learned quickly that being a great engineer was not the same as

being a great leader. I had to learn about venture capital, building teams,

managing conflict, and the brutal reality of market competition. We

eventually took the company public and later sold it to Silicon Graphics. This

experience taught me the value of 'humility'—realizing how much I didn't

know about business—and 'courage'—the willingness to take a risk on a

transformational idea.

The Path to Administration: Dean

and Provost

returned to Stanford with a new perspective. In 1994, I was appointed

chair of the Computer Science Department, and later, in 1996, Dean of

the School of Engineering. My goal was to foster interdisciplinary work.

The problems of the future—biotechnology, environment, communication—

weren't going to be solved within the silos of a single department. In 1999, I

became Provost under President Gerhard Casper. This was my

apprenticeship in university-wide leadership. I learned the intricacies of the

university budget, the importance of faculty governance, and the delicate

balance required to lead a community of independent-minded scholars.

Assuming the Presidency: A

Vision for the 21st Century

n October 2000, I was inaugurated as the 10th President of Stanford

University. I stepped into the role at a moment of great transition. The

dot-com bubble was bursting, and the world was changing rapidly. My

vision was centered on three pillars: multidisciplinary research, enhancing

undergraduate education, and expanding Stanford's global footprint. I

believed that Stanford had a responsibility to tackle 'big problems'—human

health, environmental sustainability, and international peace and security.

We launched initiatives like Bio-X, which brought together engineers,

scientists, and clinicians in ways that had never been done before.

Leading Through Crisis: The

2008 Financial Meltdown

he greatest test of my leadership came in 2008. The global financial

crisis hit our endowment hard, wiping out billions in value almost

overnight. We had to make difficult, painful decisions. We

implemented a hiring freeze, reduced budgets across the board, and had to

rethink our long-term capital projects. My priority was to protect our core

mission: teaching and research. We made a conscious decision to maintain

our commitment to need-blind admission and robust financial aid, even as

resources tightened. Transparency was key; I spent hours meeting with

faculty and staff to explain the 'why' behind our decisions. It was a lesson in

'empathy' and 'resilience'.

The Changing Campus:

Innovation and Arts

uring my 16 years, the physical and intellectual landscape of

Stanford transformed. We built the Science and Engineering Quad,

but we also invested heavily in the arts. I believed that a great

university must be a home for the soul as well as the mind. We created the

Stanford Arts Initiative and built the Bing Concert Hall and the Anderson

Collection. This reflected my belief that 'curiosity' is the engine of progress.

Whether in a lab or a studio, the drive to understand the human condition

and the physical world is the same. We also pioneered online education with

the launch of Coursera and Udacity, born out of Stanford research, aiming to

democratize knowledge globally.

A Legacy of Collaboration:

Knight-Hennessy Scholars

s I prepared to step down in 2016, I wanted to create something that

would endure beyond my presidency. Working with Phil Knight, we

launched the Knight-Hennessy Scholars program. My time as

president taught me that the world desperately needs leaders who are both

highly skilled and deeply ethical. The program was designed to bring

together the most promising graduate students from every discipline and

every corner of the globe. The goal is to build a community of future leaders

who can collaborate across cultures and fields to solve the world's most

complex challenges.

Reflections on Leadership: The

Tenets of 'Leading Matters'

ooking back, leadership is not about power; it is about service. In my

book 'Leading Matters,' I outlined the core values that guided me:

Humility, Authenticity, Courage, and Service. A leader must be willing

to admit when they are wrong, stay true to their principles even under

pressure, take bold risks for the right reasons, and always put the

institution's mission above their own ego. Leadership is a journey of

continuous learning. Each challenge—whether a technical hurdle in a RISC

processor or a financial crisis at a university—is an opportunity to grow.

The Next Chapter: Service and

Innovation

etiring from the presidency was not an end, but a transition. I

continue to serve as the Chairman of Alphabet Inc., applying the

lessons of leadership to one of the world's most influential

companies. I remain deeply involved with the Knight-Hennessy program and

the Stanford faculty. My hope is that the next generation of leaders will

embrace the spirit of 'Die Luft der Freiheit weht'—the wind of freedom

blows. We must remain open to new ideas, committed to the truth, and

dedicated to leaving the world better than we found it.
