I
I. The Budapest Years (1936–1944)
was born on September 2, 1936, in Budapest, Hungary. My
father, George, was a self-made man who built a successful
dairy business, and my mother, Maria, was the emotional
anchor of our home. My early childhood was comfortable, even
privileged, until the age of four. That year, scarlet fever nearly
took my life. It left me with a permanent legacy: a significant loss
of hearing. This disability made me an observer, someone who
had to work twice as hard to understand the world around him.
Little did I know, this was only the first of many hardships I
would have to navigate. By the early 1940s, the political climate
in Hungary began to darken as the alliance with Nazi Germany
grew more suffocating.
