Stanford’s Long-Range Vision was developed through a university-wide planning process beginning in

2017 and publicly articulated in 2018–2019. This framework describes the university's established trajectory—driven

by the Long-Range Vision—into the current strategic era of leadership under President Jonathan Levin.

The Founding Mandate

Founded in 1885 by Leland and Jane Stanford, the university was established with a clear mandate to promote the

public welfare. The 1885 Founding Grant defines the enduring mission:

“...to qualify its students for personal success and direct usefulness in life;”

“...to promote the public welfare by exercising an influence in behalf of humanity and

civilization.”
