Elements of a Good Modern Resume

  3. Education: Education involves the school or university the job applicant attended, specifically high school, college, and post-grad (masters or PhD). There is no need to include the grade school or kindergarten/nursery education as this is irrelevant to the resume. Aside from the name of the school or university, the dates attended (month and year) should also be included.
  4. Work experience: Work experience is one of the most important parts of a resume. Most of the time, it determines whether the candidate will get hired or not. Similar to education, work experience should be listed from the most recent to the oldest. Being specific is crucial when adding work experience in the resume.
  5. Awards and honors: Awards and honors can be attached to education, to work experience, or even both. In terms of education, awards can pertain to school or class honors, or recognition given from teachers or other universities. In terms of work, awards can pertain to achievements in the workplace such as (but not limited to) meeting company targets, being named employee of the month/quarter/year multiple times, closing deals with clients, etc.
  6. Skills: Aside from the work experience, skills bear the most weight in a resume. There are two types of skills you can include in the resume: technical skills and competencies. Technical skills are mainly focused on the mastery of various equipment, hardware and software. Competencies lean toward behavioral attributes.
  7. Activities and hobbies: Activities and hobbies are not required to be placed in a resume but these information can be helpful for companies. Activities and hobbies don’t have to be related to the work being applied for, but if it can be related, then the chances of getting hired will increase.
  8. Character references: The character reference section in a resume is highly underrated, that is why applicants need to add this section in their resumes or CVs. There are some employers who will not proceed with a candidate’s application if they cannot fully verify the candidate’s character references listed in the resume.

Simple Tips for an Excellent Modern Resume Layout

Listed below are some very simple tips in creating an excellent modern resume layout. This will not only make your resume detailed but also increase your chances in getting hired.

Make priority skills, objective, and work experience

Skills and work experience define a resume. There is no need to create the full contents of the resume as you can write first your skills and work experience in a separate piece of paper. It does not really take too much time and effort in writing the skills and work experience especially if you aware of all of them. Place photo and personal information on top of the resume

Additionally, employers will not only be considering resumes that don’t have any photo of the applicant, so make sure a photo should be included. Personal information includes the current address, contact number, and email address.

Never list down the personal information at the second page or at a section where it can’t be seen by the employer. This might cause some problems where the employer will switch to another candidate since basic information cannot be seen in the resume.

Limit resume to two pages long

A resume length should not be as long as a business plan, in fact it should only be two pages long. If you can fit every information in one page, then it will be better. Similar to a resume without a photo, a resume that is longer than two pages will automatically take a trip to the trash bin or the shredder. Personal information, the photo, work experience, and skills should be in the first page while the other information should be listed in the second page.

Use professional fonts

A resume is still a business document, so professional fonts should be used. Graffiti, gothic, comic book, and other sans-serif fonts should be avoided at all times. Even if an applicant applies for a graphic design position, using sans-serif font styles should not be an excuse when creating a resume. Among the fonts you can use include Arial, Cambria, Calibri, Didot, Garamond, Georgia, Helvetica, Bookman Old Style, and Times New Roman.

Steps to Designing a Good Modern Resume

Gather the necessary information

Before you start writing your resume, you first need to gather the necessary information. Make sure all the information are specific and correct, as potential employers will find out if you will incorporate false information in the resume. You can write all the information first in a separate piece of paper or encode them in a separate document.

Write personal information and attach photo

Personal information refers to the contact number, current address, and email address. The personal information should be 100% accurate as potential employers will be looking at this information first if they decide to hire you or let you proceed in the application process. Personal information and photo should be placed at the center of the paper.

In regards to the photo, it is much better if you attach a formal or business casual photo. Remember that the photo should resemble the dimensions of an ID photo (1×1 inches or 2×2 inches). A white background should be used and the face should only be taken (not the entire body).

Write skills, work experience, and education

It’s now time to write one of the most important elements of a resume. As previously mentioned, the skills, work experience, and education you incorporate in the resume should be specific and detailed. The skills should include technical skills and competencies, while work experience and educational background should include the name of the school and company, dates of attendance, dates of employment, and job positions respectively. All of these information should be listed in the first page of the resume.

The order of the educational background should be listed from the most recent to the oldest. Additionally, if an applicant did not attend a certain high school or college, there is no need to write it down in the resume.

Among the information the candidate should write in the resume should include the full name of the company, the job position that the applicant held, and the inclusive dates the applicant worked for the company. This applies to all the companies the applicant has worked before.

Write activities or hobbies, awards or achievements, references

After writing the most important information in the resume, it’s now time to write the other information as well. These information can be listed in the second page of the resume. You can start with writing the awards or achievements, then move on with the activities or hobbies, and then lastly the character references.

Although awards and honors can be attached to both work and education, a separate section should be written for this. Write down the name of the award first, followed by the name of company or school, and date when the award or recognition was given.

Here are examples of activities that can be related to a job application:

Types of Resumes

  • Chronological: The work history is listed in order and according to dates in a chronological resume. The most current position is listed first ending with the earliest in this type of resume.
  • Functional: A functional resume focuses on the skills and experience and decreases the value of the work history. In this resume, the employment history is also listed.
  • Combination: In a combination resume, the skills and traits are highlighted and the work experience is listed in chronological order. This gives the applicant a flexible platform to list his workplace assets.
  • Targeted: The final format that a job applicant might want to consider is a targeted resume. This resume type is customized and specific to the position the applicant wants. Work history, abilities, and education are also listed.

Resume Sizes

US paper sizes are used to create a resume. Here is a list below:

  • 8.5 × 11 inches: This is the most common size used for a resume. The text can even fit in one page if only a few information will be written.
  • 8.5 × 14 inches: A slightly bigger size for a resume but is rarely used. Use this paper size if the previous size is not available.
  • 8.27 × 11.69 inches (A4): Compared to the 8.5 × 14 inch paper, this paper is also rarely used for a resume. Use this paper size if no other paper size is available.
