1.) Write Two Related Independent Clauses
Start by writing two independent clauses that can relate to each other. Just note that an independent clause is a complete sentence with a subject and a predicate that can stand by itself. Here are examples of two independent clauses that are related to each other, “The banana bread I ate was a bit hard and stale.” and “I had to drink water to swallow the solid chunks of bread.” You can also create an outline before writing the two independent clauses.
2.) Position Both Independent Clauses using Logic
After you have written out two independent clauses, you must position them in such a way that it makes logical sense. Using the above examples of independent clauses you can arrange them in two different ways, “The banana bread I ate was a bit hard and stale, I had to drink water to swallow the solid chunks of bread.” or “I had to drink water to swallow the solid chunks of bread, the banana bread I ate was a bit hard and stale.” The first arrangement of the independent clause makes logical sense, while the second arrangement commits a logical fallacy. Ensure that both independent clauses follow a logical structure and progression.
3.) Connect Both Clauses with a Coordinating Conjunction
When you have finished arranging both independent clauses, you must connect both clauses with a single coordinating conjunctionthat will make logical sense. Using the same example above, we can use the following coordinating conjunctions, And & so. The example will then be, “The banana bread I ate was a bit hard and stale, so I had to drink water to swallow the solid chunks of bread.”
4.) Repeat Steps 1 to 3 until Satisfied
After you have completed connecting both independent clauses with a coordinating conjunction, you have successfully made a compound sentence. If you need to create more compound sentences you may repeat steps 1 to three until you are satisfied with your writing.
