Mathematics, Human Spaceflight, and the Work Behind NASA’s Early Missions
Introduction
A spacecraft may travel thousands of miles, but the path it follows begins with
numbers. Before the United States could send astronauts into orbit or toward the Moon,
engineers and mathematicians had to determine how a vehicle should move, when it
should launch, and where it should return. Katherine G. Johnson became one of the people
who performed and checked those calculations. Born in White Sulphur Springs, West
Virginia, in 1918, she built a career in mathematics at a time when racial segregation and
limited opportunities made scientific careers difficult for many Black Americans. She
joined the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) in 1953 and continued at
the organization after it became NASA in 1958. Her work included trajectory calculations
for Alan Shepard’s first American spaceflight, verification of the orbital calculations for
John Glenn’s 1962 mission, and calculations associated with the Apollo program. Johnson’s
career shows how mathematical analysis, independent verification, and technical
experience contributed to the development of American human spaceflight.
Education and the Path to NACA
Johnson’s interest in mathematics developed early. She was born on August 26, 1918,
and because educational opportunities for Black children were limited in her hometown,
her family made arrangements for her to attend school in Institute, West Virginia. She
advanced quickly and entered West Virginia State College, where she earned a bachelor’s
degree in mathematics and French in 1937. A mathematics professor, W. W. Schieffelin
Claytor, encouraged her toward research mathematics. Johnson later became one of the
first Black students selected to integrate West Virginia University’s graduate program,
although she left after a short period and returned to teaching.
In June 1953, Johnson joined NACA at Langley Research Center in Virginia. She was
initially part of the West Area Computing section, where women performed mathematical
calculations for engineers and researchers. The work required accuracy and familiarity
with mathematical methods, but Johnson was interested in understanding the engineering
questions behind the calculations. She soon moved into the Flight Research Division,
where she analyzed flight-test data and worked on technical problems. Her transition was
important because it placed her mathematics closer to the design and evaluation of
aircraft and, eventually, spacecraft.
From Aeronautical Research to Spaceflight
The launch of the Soviet satellite Sputnik in 1957 accelerated the United States’ space
