EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Amazon is the world’s largest corporate purchaser of renewable energy, a title held since 2020. Our

commitment to The Climate Pledge—to reach net-zero carbon by 2040—is powered by a rapid

transition to carbon-free energy across our global operations. As of early 2025, Amazon reached its

goal of matching 100% of the electricity consumed across its global operations with 100% renewable

energy, seven years ahead of the original 2030 target.

AMAZON SUSTAINABILITY

THE CLIMATE PLEDGE

In 2019, Amazon co-founded The Climate Pledge, a commitment to reach net-zero carbon by 2040—

10 years ahead of the Paris Agreement. This pledge requires signatories to be leaders in

transparency and decarbonization.

THREE CORE PRINCIPLES:

Regular Reporting:

Measuring and reporting greenhouse gas emissions on

a regular basis.

Carbon Elimination:

Implementing decarbonization strategies in line with

the Paris Agreement.

Credible Offsets:

Neutralizing any remaining emissions with additional,

quantifiable, real, permanent, and socially-beneficial offsets.

Transitioning to renewable energy is the most significant lever we have to eliminate carbon from our

operations, particularly for our massive data center (AWS) and fulfillment infrastructure.

North America remains Amazon's largest market for renewable energy. Our projects are not just

powering our offices and data centers; they are adding new, clean capacity to local grids.

NOTABLE PROJECTS

Amazon Wind Farm Texas

Located in Scurry County, this 253 MW project includes over 100 turbines, generating enough energy

to power more than 90,000 homes annually.

Solar in the "Sunshine Belt"

Major utility-scale projects in Arizona, California, and Virginia support the massive energy

requirements of AWS Region US-East-1.

By focusing on additionality—bringing *new* renewable energy to the grid rather than buying

existing credits—we drive the transition of the entire energy sector.

(Netherlands and Germany) and massive solar

farms in Spain and Italy.

ASIA-PACIFIC

Rapid growth in India, Japan, and Australia. In

India, Amazon has launched several wind-solar

hybrid projects, which provide a more

consistent energy profile than standalone

plants.

Data centers are energy-intensive. AWS is committed to making its infrastructure the most

sustainable in the world. Studies show that moving on-premises workloads to AWS can reduce the

carbon footprint of those workloads by nearly 80%.

"Sustainability is not just a goal for AWS; it's a design constraint. From Graviton chips to

water cooling, we optimize every layer."

EFFICIENCY INNOVATIONS:

Custom Silicon:

AWS Graviton processors are up to 60% more energy-efficient for the

same performance.

Water Stewardship:

Implementing water-cooling recycling and using "reclaimed

water" for cooling data centers to preserve local drinking supplies.

Low-Carbon Concrete:

Using specialized concrete mixes in data center construction to

reduce embodied carbon.

To reach net-zero, we must look beyond current technologies. Amazon’s Climate Pledge Fund invests

$2 billion in companies developing products and services that facilitate the transition to a low-

carbon economy.

Green Hydrogen

Investing in electrolyzer technology to create

fuel for heavy-duty transport and fulfillment

operations that cannot be easily electrified.

Long-Duration Storage

Supporting iron-flow and other battery

technologies that can store renewable energy

for days, not just hours.

DECARBONIZING LOGISTICS

The "last mile" is going electric. Amazon has deployed over 15,000 Rivian electric delivery vans across

the U.S. and Europe, powered by the very renewable energy projects detailed in this portfolio.
