Non-Discrimination Policy Examples – PDF

Discrimination has been around since time immemorial. Here are a few famous examples. If you have seen the movie 12 Years A Slave starring Lupita Nyong’o and Chitiwel Ejiofor, then you would have an idea on how the local Americans during that time and age treated their fellow African-Americans. The 19th century was a period and time where the “white” folk thought themselves as the more superior race and treated the “niggers” or black people as inferior to them.

It is important to understand that the cotton industry was booming at this period since it was used to create shirts and other fabrics. So the white slave masters would often let their newly acquired black slaves work the cotton mill and expect them to reach their daily quota. And if that was not enough, the concept of human rights did not exist since their white slave masters would often take the opportunity to abuse them by beating them up or even physically raping them. The film’s epilogue displays a series of graphics recounting Northup’s unsuccessful suits against Brown, Hamilton, and Burch, along with the 1853 publication of Northup’s slave narrative memoir. Keep in mind that was in 1841. Let us fast forward to 1957 where we proceed to our next film about racism: The Butler. This movie tells the story of how one man grew up in poverty and made a living for himself by eventually becoming a butler to Dwight D. Eisenhower’s administration.

From there, he has witnessed the coming and going of several presidents and how they have attempted to address the issue of civil rights, but somehow failed. Louis, Cecil’s (the butler) elder son, becomes a university student at Fisk University in Tennessee and joins a student program led by Southern Christian Leadership Conference(SCLC) activist James Lawson. He got himself arrested afterward when he decided to not sit in the classified area marked “colored”. You may also like examples of it policies and procedures.

In 1961, Louis (the butler’s son) and other freedom riders were attacked by the Ku Klux Klan rallying the people saying that black people are not welcomed and that they should head home. Two years later, he joins the Birmingham Children’s Crusade but was overwhelmed by the police, their dogs, and their water cannons.

Just after President Kennedy proposed the Civil Rights Act Movement of 1964 based on what transpired from the Birmingham Children’s Crusade, he was assassinated and which made his successor, Lyndon B. Johnson, enact the said legislation. It was during the Johnson administration that the Voting Rights Act of 1965 was implemented. In the part of Cecil, he does not only receive a lower salary than that of white workers but is also unable to advance his career which leads to a confrontation between him and his supervisor. With President Ronald Reagan’s support, Cecil prevails and is invited to dinner by the family. Cecil becomes uncomfortable with the class divisions in the White House. After witnessing Reagan’s refusal to support economic sanctions against Apartheid South Africa, Cecil resigns and later realizes that his son’s actions are deemed heroic as he always stood up for what is right and just while he always repressed himself to always sticking to the law which made him blind to reality. Cecil then knew the feeling of pride and joy when he saw President Obama being inaugurated as the 44th President of the United States of America (P.O.T.U.S.). It is important to understand that racism and sexism are still present, no matter how much people want to deny it. Last April 12, 2018, an incident which involved the arrest of two men simply for trying to use the restroom at a certain Starbucks outlet in Philadelphia without really ordering anything was made viral. As a result, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Starbucks met with the two gentlemen and personally apologized saying it was a mistake on his part since the employees of Starbucks took the act of purchasing before using store facilities a little too seriously.

As a result, Kevin Johnson, the Starbucks CEO announced the temporary one-day closure of all 8,000 of its U.S. chain stores in the afternoon to conduct racial-bias education to all its employees to prevent something like this from happening ever again. Although sexism is not a major issue compared to racism, there are still issues that have to be resolved on treating everyone equally and justly. You may also see petty cash policy examples.

It is understandable that there are homophobics or conventional type of people who do not see eye to eye with the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT) community. Just because they are neither a male or female anymore does not mean they do not deserve the same respect as ordinary people do. They are still human after all. You do not have to like them, but it is a must to respect them as they are. And with that in mind, it is important to set up a non-discrimination policy in the workplace. Yes, that includes the physically challenged people.

Make no mistake, these people are just as good and just as talented as any human being without any defects whatsoever, heck, they are even more successful. Listed below are some of tips that small businesses can adhere to when making their own anti-discriminatory policy. 1. Mention that any sort of discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex (e.g. which includes pregnancy, sexual orientation, or gender identity), national origin, disability, age or genetic information (such as family medical history) is illegal and will not be tolerated. If there is a need for you to provide some definitions and examples to help the employees better understand, then do so. You may also see how to create a company policy.
  2. State that accommodations will be made according to the applicant who is physically challenged or for religious reasons as required by law. However, despite the accommodations, they are still expected to perform their very best on a daily basis.
  3. List down the ways that employees can report discrimination.

    • Should it become necessary, however, employees can report directly to the manager. You may also like policy proposal examples & samples.
