To prepare for a Principal Mechanical Engineer role, Aaron should focus on the following developmental areas:
Over-Engineering & COTS Utilization:
Aaron has a tendency to design bespoke mechanical solutions for every
problem. While his custom designs are technically brilliant, they are often unnecessary. He must improve his utilization
of Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) components (e.g., standard fasteners, hinges, and latches) to accelerate design
times and reduce supply chain complexity.
Delegation to Junior Drafters:
Aaron currently spends too much time detailing his own 2D production drawings. To
scale his impact, he needs to confidently hand off his 3D assemblies to the junior drafting team, acting as a final
reviewer rather than the primary drafter. This will free his bandwidth for macro-level system architecture.
6. FUTURE GOALS & DEVELOPMENT PLAN (FY2027)
Goal 1 (Product Architecture):
Serve as the Lead Mechanical Architect for the upcoming "Project Orion" wearable
device, owning the enclosure design from initial industrial design (ID) surface models through to mass production.
Goal 2 (Standardization):
Partner with Supply Chain to establish a standardized internal CAD library of approved
COTS components to streamline hardware development across all engineering squads by Q2.
Goal 3 (Professional Certification):
Attain the advanced ASME GD&T Professional Certification (GDTP - Senior
Level) to solidify his expertise in geometric tolerancing and train the junior engineering staff.
Goal 4 (Mentorship):
Act as the formal engineering mentor for two Junior Mechanical Engineers, holding weekly
design review sessions focusing on DFM and injection molding principles.
