Cross-Functional Communication:
Julian is highly effective when communicating with fellow engineers. However,
when discussing blockers or feature trade-offs with Product Managers, he occasionally dives too deep into technical
jargon. He must practice abstracting his technical work into business-centric language, explaining *why* an
architectural choice matters to the product's success.
Proactive Architectural Input:
Currently, Julian excels at implementing architectural designs handed down by the
Staff Engineers. Moving forward, he should take a more proactive role during the initial RFC (Request for Comments)
phase, pitching his own architectural solutions and leading the design discussions for medium-sized epics.
6. DEVELOPMENT PLAN & FUTURE GOALS (FY2027)
Goal 1 (Technical Leadership):
Act as the Technical Lead for the upcoming Q2 "Frontend-Backend GraphQL
Integration" epic, managing the API contract design and coordinating deliverables across both squads.
Goal 2 (Cloud Infrastructure):
Complete the AWS Certified Developer - Associate certification by the end of Q3 to
deepen his understanding of cloud-native deployments and serverless architecture.
Goal 3 (Mentorship):
Serve as the primary technical mentor for an incoming summer engineering intern, guiding
them through their capstone coding project and onboarding them to our Git workflow.
Goal 4 (Process Improvement):
Audit the current backend error logging framework (Datadog/Sentry) and propose
a consolidated tagging strategy to reduce alert fatigue by Q1 2027.
7. OVERALL ASSESSMENT & RECOMMENDATION
Julian Cortez is an exceptional Software Developer II whose technical precision, problem-solving skills, and
collaborative mindset have fundamentally improved our Backend API services. His ability to deliver high-quality,
scalable code while simultaneously reducing technical debt makes him a highly valued member of the engineering
organization. Julian is enthusiastically recommended for the maximum allowable merit salary increase, full performance
bonus payout, and is placed on a targeted development track for a Senior Software Developer promotion.
