Lubaina Himid Artist Statement
Nationality:
British
Medium:
Painting, Installation
Key Themes:
History • Identity • Memory • Representation • Cultural Narratives
Painting has always been a way for me to ask questions about history, memory, and the stories that
have been left untold. I am interested in how ordinary objects, patterns, color, and figures can carry
histories that are both deeply personal and profoundly collective.
My work draws from archives, literature, music, and everyday life, weaving together fragments of
the past with contemporary experience. I am fascinated by the relationship between identity and
place, and by the ways in which cultural histories continue to shape the present.
Color plays an essential role in my practice. It is both expressive and symbolic, creating rhythm,
emotion, and moments of reflection. Through painting and installation, I seek to encourage viewers
to reconsider familiar narratives and engage with overlooked voices.
I believe art can reveal hidden narratives while opening new possibilities for dialogue. Rather than
offering definitive answers, I aim to create works that inspire curiosity, reflection, and empathy.
