For a long time, I believed academic achievement was measured purely by the symmetry
of a 4.0 GPA and the neatness of a Scantron sheet. That illusion shattered during my
sophomore year when I enrolled in an advanced differential equations seminar and
encountered a problem that could not be solved by memorizing formulas. Our professor
presented an open-ended modeling challenge regarding disease transmission dynamics
that resisted standard textbook algorithms. For three weeks, my initial approaches failed
completely. My notebook pages were filled with crossed-out matrices, dead ends, and
mounting frustration.
That rigorous hurdle taught me a defining lesson: true academic achievement is not the
absence of error, but the endurance of the iteration. Refusing to accept defeat, I spent
hours in the campus library examining non-linear dynamical systems outside of the core
syllabus. I taught myself how to build a custom Python script to simulate variable contact
rates and test alternative boundary conditions. When the mathematical model finally
stabilized and accurately mirrored real-world epidemiological curves, it wasn't just a
high grade on an assignment—it was the profound thrill of genuine intellectual
discovery.
Currently majoring in Applied Mathematics with a concentration in Biostatistics, my
academic pursuits are anchored in a larger vision. I aim to pursue a Ph.D. in
Computational Epidemiology, with the ultimate career goal of working alongside public
health agencies to construct predictive mathematical models that optimize the allocation
of medical resources during infectious disease outbreaks. I want to translate abstract
equations into concrete, life-saving interventions for vulnerable populations.
