An Important Life Lesson
GEOSPATIAL SCIENCE & ENVIRONMENTAL CONSERVATION
am a person who naturally finds comfort in data. Before my first solo
backcountry trek to a remote waterfall in the Pacific Northwest, I spent three
weeks meticulously planning the route. I built a massively complex spreadsheet
detailing every ounce of gear, my required daily caloric intake, and minute elevation
changes. I believed I had engineered a flawless expedition. I thought I had conquered
the unpredictability of the wilderness directly from my laptop.
Nature, however, is entirely indifferent to spreadsheet formulas. On the second
day of the hike, a sudden, unforecasted microburst washed out the primary trail. My
meticulously planned route was gone in an instant. Standing in the freezing rain
with my digital map rendering a blank screen, I experienced a profound moment of
panic. The important life lesson I learned that day was harsh but necessary: true
preparation is not about creating an unbreakable plan; it is about developing the
resilience and adaptability to navigate the world when your plan inevitably breaks.
Forced to abandon the itinerary, I relied on my analog compass and safely
navigated a secondary, much steeper ridge to eventually reach the waterfall. The
view was entirely different than the one I had planned for, but it was magnificent.
This lesson in adaptability has fundamentally shaped my academic trajectory. I am
currently a sophomore majoring in Geospatial Science with a concentration in
Environmental Conservation. My professional goal is to work as a GIS analyst for the
National Park Service or the US Forest Service, mapping rapidly changing ecological
