PURSUING
MY CAREER
WHEN THE LEVEES BREACHED
in my coastal hometown during Hurricane
Florence, the most terrifying element was not the rapidly rising water; it was the
catastrophic collapse of communication. Families were stranded on roofs while local
dispatch centers, overwhelmed by call volume and utilizing outdated topographical
maps, struggled to deploy rescue units. My own family spent forty-eight hours in an
evacuation shelter where critical medical supplies were misrouted due to logistical
gridlock. As a high school volunteer at that shelter, I witnessed a harsh reality: in a
crisis, compassion is entirely paralyzed without coordinated, scalable logistics.
That experience ignited a profound realization. Natural disasters do not just
destroy physical infrastructure; they violently expose and exploit systemic
disorganization. I realized that my community did not just need more volunteers to
hand out water; we needed structural architects of crisis response. This is the exact
motivation for pursuing my career.
I am currently a junior majoring in Emergency Management with a minor in
Geographic Information Systems (GIS). My overarching professional goal is to
become a federal disaster response coordinator. Specifically, I want to modernize
how local municipalities communicate during infrastructural collapse by integrating
real-time drone mapping and predictive GIS modeling into standard emergency
dispatch protocols. I want to build systems that anticipate the chaos of a disaster
rather than merely reacting to it.
