A Life Changing Experience
Focus: Urban Agronomy & Community Resilience
THE VACANT LOT
at the corner of 4th and Elm in my neighborhood had been an eyesore for
as long as I could remember—a dumping ground for broken furniture and shattered glass.
During the summer of my junior year, a local non-profit secured the lease to transform the
blighted property into a community garden. Needing volunteer hours for graduation, I signed
up to help clear the debris. I expected it to be a tedious, sweaty weekend project. I did not expect
it to be a life-changing experience that would dictate my entire career path.
The physical transformation of the lot was staggering. Over two months, we cleared out
glass, tested and amended the soil, built raised cedar beds, and established a drip irrigation
system. But the true transformation was not agricultural; it was social. I watched elderly
neighbors who had lived next to each other in silence for decades suddenly bonding over
heirloom tomato varieties. I saw single parents finding a reliable source of fresh produce for
their families in a neighborhood notoriously classified by the city as a food desert. The garden
became a living, breathing community hub.
That summer changed my life because it fundamentally shifted my worldview. It taught
me that food is not merely sustenance; it is a profound social equalizer and a powerful tool for
systemic community healing. I realized that the environments we build directly dictate the
health, connection, and dignity of the people living within them.
This realization propelled me to major in Sustainable Food Systems with a minor in Urban
Agronomy. My educational goal is to master the science of high-yield, low-impact urban
agriculture. My professional ambition is to work as an urban agricultural planner for a mid-
sized municipality, designing policies that repurpose vacant city-owned land into sustainable
food hubs. I want to build green infrastructure that actively dismantles urban food insecurity.
