SOCIAL JUSTICE IS RARELY WON
in the sweeping rhetoric of appellate courtrooms;
it is fought for on front porches where families receive illegal eviction notices wrapped
in legal jargon they cannot afford to decode. Growing up in a rapidly gentrifying urban
neighborhood in Philadelphia, I witnessed firsthand how systemic economic
displacement destroys communities. During my sophomore year of high school, my
family and twelve neighboring households received sudden lease terminations from an
out-of-state corporate property management firm. Most of our neighbors spoke English
as a second language and had no access to legal representation. Within weeks, long-
standing community pillars were uprooted simply because landlords capitalized on our
community's legal isolation.
Determined to fight back, I spent my weekends volunteering with a grassroots legal
aid clinic, translating housing documents for affected tenants and helping families
document code violations. Sitting across the table from elderly residents facing
homelessness taught me a profound lesson: legal access in America is frequently a
commodity reserved for those who can pay for it. I realized that true social justice
requires dismantling the structural barriers that deny marginalized populations
fundamental due process. Witnessing the power imbalance between corporate landlords
and vulnerable tenants transformed my grief over neighborhood displacement into an
unwavering professional calling.
