uring my sophomore year of high school, I volunteered
as a bookkeeping assistant for a local community food
pantry. It was tedious work—matching physical receipts to
digital ledger entries—but it felt meaningful. One afternoon, I
uncovered a recurring calculation error in our procurement
software. The glitch was systematically underpaying our
primary local produce supplier by hundreds of dollars a
month. When I brought it to the director’s attention, he
hesitated. The pantry was chronically underfunded, and
correcting the error meant returning thousands of dollars we
desperately needed for our upcoming winter drive.
In that quiet, tense office, my personal values moved
from abstract concepts to concrete demands. I realized that
integrity is not a luxury reserved for convenient moments; it is
an absolute requirement, especially when it is difficult. I
respectfully but firmly insisted that we had to notify the
vendor and correct the ledger. We ultimately paid the supplier
back. It strained our budget temporarily, but it salvaged our
community trust and established a stronger partnership with
the vendor. That experience cemented my defining core value:
radical accountability.
This principle has become the compass for my academic
and professional trajectory. I am currently a junior majoring in
Accounting with a concentration in Forensic Finance. My goal
is to become a forensic accountant working for a state
