When nursing students discuss clinical rotations, they usually talk about patient
assessments, pharmacology charts, and vital signs. For me, clinical rotations have always
come with an underlying layer of arithmetic: calculating how many hours at my
weekend shift job I will have to sacrifice to afford the uniform, the stethoscope, and the
transit pass. As a junior majoring in Nursing with a minor in Healthcare Informatics, my
education is a constant exercise in balancing rigorous clinical training with the relentless
necessity of financial survival. This scholarship would do far more than ease a ledger
column; it would fundamentally alter my capacity to succeed.
Currently, I finance my education through a combination of federal student loans,
institutional grants, and twenty-five hours of weekly employment as a medical
receptionist at an urgent care clinic. While working in a medical environment provides
valuable exposure, the physical and mental toll of closing shifts followed by 6:00 AM
hospital clinicals has pushed me to my absolute limits. Last semester, the exhaustion
caught up with me during a critical pharmacology exam, resulting in a grade that did not
reflect my true understanding of the material. It was a stark wake-up call that my
current schedule was actively undermining the very academic excellence I was striving
to achieve.
This scholarship would directly dismantle that barrier. By providing reliable financial
assistance for tuition and course materials, this award would allow me to immediately
reduce my employment hours from twenty-five to ten hours per week. That reclaimed
fifteen hours would not be allocated to leisure; they would be reinvested directly where
they belong: in the simulation lab, mastering advanced clinical procedures, and
volunteering at our campus mobile health clinic. Furthermore, it would relieve the
