IN FEBRUARY 2021,
modern civilization in my Texas hometown simply stopped working.
When Winter Storm Uri paralyzed the state, our neighborhood lost power for four consecutive
days in freezing temperatures. We huddled in our living room, rationing firewood and watching
our pipes burst, completely cut off from the infrastructure we had always taken for granted.
Sitting in the dark, listening to the transformer down the street violently short-circuit, I realized
that electrical engineering is not just an abstract science of circuits and signals; it is the fragile
backbone of human survival.
That catastrophic grid failure fundamentally rewired my academic trajectory. Before the
freeze, I viewed engineering as a pathway to building consumer electronics or commercial
software. After the freeze, I understood that the most urgent engineering crisis in the United
States is the modernization and stabilization of our aging power grids. The transition to
renewable energy is scientifically necessary, but without massive overhauls to energy storage
and transmission infrastructure, our grids will continue to buckle under extreme weather
events.
I am currently a junior pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering with a
specialized focus on Power Systems and Renewable Integration. My professional objective is to
become a grid reliability engineer working for a major regional transmission organization or a
public utility. I want to design robust, decentralized microgrids and develop advanced energy
storage solutions that can seamlessly integrate variable wind and solar power without
compromising grid stability during severe climate disruptions.
