Disaster-Resilient Infrastructure
esilience is rarely a cinematic moment of triumph; more often, it is a staggering,
unglamorous mountain of paperwork. When the California wildfires swept through
my county during my junior year of high school, my family lost our home and the small
hardware store my parents had operated for fifteen years. In the terrifying weeks that
followed, while living out of a cramped FEMA trailer, I became the designated project
manager for my family’s recovery. At sixteen, I was navigating complex insurance claims,
filing disaster relief appeals, and cataloging the charred remains of our livelihood on a
legal pad. True resilience, I learned, is not just the emotional capacity to survive a tragedy
—it is the methodical, exhausting discipline required to rebuild after one.
However, sifting through the ashes of my neighborhood ignited an unexpected
fascination. While waiting for insurance adjusters, I began studying the few structures on
our street that had miraculously survived the firestorm. I read municipal zoning codes,
researched ignition-resistant building materials, and studied defensive landscaping. I
realized that the devastation of our community was not entirely an unavoidable act of
nature; it was exacerbated by outdated civic planning and vulnerable residential design in
the Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI). That tragedy transformed my sense of loss into a
definitive professional purpose.
I am currently a sophomore pursuing a Bachelor of Architecture with a minor in
Urban Planning. My career goal is to become a lead architect specializing in disaster-
resilient, affordable housing. I want to design residential structures utilizing modern fire-
resistant composites, localized micro-grids, and aerodynamic rooflines that deflect flying
