W
hen the unprecedented winter storm hit our state a few years ago, the rolling
blackouts that were promised to last only two hours stretched into four agonizing days.
My family, like millions of others, huddled around a single camping stove in our freezing
living room. While my parents' immediate concern was keeping us warm, I found myself
obsessively trying to understand why the failure was so catastrophic. Using the brief
windows of cellular service we had, I began researching grid interconnectivity,
winterization protocols, and baseload capacity. That week of darkness illuminated my
exact career aspirations: I want to become a power systems engineer dedicated to
modernizing and decentralizing our electrical grid.
I am currently a junior majoring in Electrical Engineering with a concentration in
renewable energy integration. My primary career aspiration is to work in utility-scale
infrastructure, specifically designing micro-grids that can operate independently during
extreme weather events. The traditional, centralized power model is no longer resilient
enough to handle the realities of severe climate fluctuations. I want to build a career
developing smart-grid technologies that seamlessly integrate solar and wind resources
while ensuring that catastrophic, statewide failures become a relic of the past.
Preparing for this highly technical career requires rigorous academic dedication. I
have maintained a 3.8 GPA through challenging coursework in thermodynamics, circuit
analysis, and power electronics. Additionally, I am a lead designer on our university’s
Solar Decathlon team, where we build energy-efficient, sustainable housing models.
However, the theoretical knowledge I gain in the classroom must be paired with hands-
on industry experience if I am to be effective in my future career.
