ARCHITECTURE & ADAPTIVE REUSE
FOR AS LONG AS I CAN REMEMBER,
the skyline of my Midwestern hometown
has been defined by the hulking, rusted silhouette of an abandoned automotive stamping
plant. While many residents view the decaying five-story brick structure as an eyesore
and a monument to economic decline, I have always viewed it as a masterpiece of
structural engineering simply waiting for its next chapter. Where others see urban decay,
I see embodied carbon, historical preservation, and profound civic potential. This
perspective is the driving force behind my professional goals.
I am currently a junior majoring in Architecture with a concentration in
Sustainable Urban Design. While traditional architectural programs often emphasize the
creation of entirely new structures, my academic passion lies in adaptive reuse. The most
sustainable building is the one that has already been built. My primary professional goal
is to become a licensed commercial architect specializing in retrofitting and repurposing
post-industrial infrastructure. I want to transform abandoned factories, mills, and
warehouses into affordable housing, community centers, and green tech incubators
without erasing the historical blue-collar identity of the neighborhoods that surround
them.
Reaching this level of professional licensure is an incredibly rigorous process.
Beyond the demanding five-year bachelor's degree program, I must complete thousands
of hours of the Architectural Experience Program (AXP) and pass the multi-division
Architect Registration Examination (ARE). To be competitive in this field, I need to
immerse myself in studio projects, master complex Building Information Modeling (BIM)
software, and secure apprenticeships at forward-thinking design firms.
