The first time I saw the devastating real-world impact of a digital
vulnerability, I was nineteen years old, working as a Tier-1 IT helpdesk intern for my
home county's public school district. It was the second week of September when a
coordinated ransomware attack breached our outdated servers. In less than two hours,
the entire district was paralyzed. Teachers were locked out of their lesson plans, payroll
was frozen, and years of sensitive student data were suddenly encrypted and held
hostage. Watching our chronically underfunded IT department scramble to manually
rebuild the network from physical backups taught me a chilling lesson: the frontlines of
modern warfare are no longer geographic; they are digital.
That chaotic week completely dismantled my preconceived notions about the tech
industry. I realized that the most vital technology careers are not found in developing the
next viral consumer app in Silicon Valley; they are found in the unglamorous, high-
stakes work of defending public civic infrastructure. Municipal governments, public
schools, and rural hospitals are prime targets for cyberattacks precisely because they
lack the enterprise-level budgets to defend themselves. I want to be the firewall that
protects them.
I am currently a junior majoring in Information Technology with a specialized
concentration in Cybersecurity and Network Defense. My overarching career goal is to
become a Cybersecurity Systems Architect dedicated to the public sector. I aim to work
