Good evening, everyone. For those of you who don’t know me, I’m Sarah — Emily’s aunt, and
the person responsible for her lifelong belief that dinner is simply a pause between desserts.
Emily, I’ve watched you grow from the little girl who lined up her stuffed animals to teach them
spelling lessons, into the warm, generous woman standing here tonight. You were always the one
who took care of everyone — the cousin who shared her dessert, the niece who never missed a
birthday, the friend who simply showed up. So seeing someone finally take care of you has been
the happiest thing I’ve ever known.
And Daniel — from the moment Emily told me about “this guy from the climbing gym who
makes really good pancakes,” I knew we were in good hands. Anyone who can make Emily laugh
like that is family already. And watching the two of you together, I finally understand what all the
fuss was about.
I’ve been married for thirty-one years, and if I may offer one small piece of advice: marriage
lives in the small moments. The coffee made without asking. The hand reached for in the dark.
The inside joke at a crowded table. You two already do that, without even thinking. So my only
advice is this — keep doing it. And call your aunt once in a while. She worries.
Please join me in raising a glass to Emily and Daniel —may your life together be filled
with love, laughter, and far too much pie.
With love,
Aunt
Sarah
