Friend

Groom
To Ben & Charlotte — A toast from one of Ben’s oldest friends — simple,
sincere, and ready to be read aloud.
For those of you who don’t know me — I’m one of Ben’s oldest friends. We
met in our first week of college, bonded over terrible dorm food and
even worse study habits, and we’ve never managed to shake each other
since.
Fifteen years is a long time, and I’ve been around for most of it: the all-
nighters, the first job he hated, the city he moved to knowing no one, and
a few haircuts we agreed never to speak of again. Through all of it, one
thing stayed true. Ben is the friend who remembers the small things —
who answers the phone at midnight, who shows up early to help you move,
who quietly does the right thing when no one is watching.
And then he met Charlotte. Honestly, we saw it before he did. She makes
him laugh harder, think bigger, and she’s the only person who ever got him
to cook anything that didn’t come from a box. Charlotte — from all of us
who love him, thank you. The way Ben looks at you when you’re not
watching says everything we need to know. You are the best thing that
ever happened to him, and he knows it.
Ben — today you married the person you’ve been hoping for your whole
life. My only advice is this: love her the way you have always loved the rest
of us — fully, faithfully, and without keeping score. Do that, and you’ll have
a marriage that outlasts us all.
So please, everyone — stand with me, raise your glass, and join me in
wishing this wonderful couple a lifetime of happiness together.
