i everyone. For those of you who don’t know me, I’m Priya —
Maya’s college roommate and, depending on the week, either
her very favorite person or her main source of bad decisions.
When Maya first told me about Daniel, she tried to play it cool. It
lasted about forty seconds. “He’s kind,” she said, like it was no
big deal. “Like, really kind.” Coming from a woman who once
wrote off a perfectly nice guy because of the squeak in his
sneakers, I knew we were done for.
And then I met him. Daniel spent his first ten minutes at my
apartment helping me carry a sofa up two flights of stairs. Maya
stood at the top of the landing with her arms crossed and this
look on her face that said, “I told you so.” That was the moment
I understood.
Because that’s who they are together. They make each other’s
lives lighter. Daniel gets Maya to close the spreadsheet, put
down the to-do list, and actually laugh. And Maya gets Daniel to
stop working long enough to enjoy a Saturday. Around each
other, they’re the calmest, silliest versions of themselves.
Honestly? It’s a little annoying. In the very best way.

To Maya and Daniel —
may your coffee stay hot,
your wifi stay strong,
and your love stay exactly this easy.
