ood evening, everyone. For those of you who don’t know me, I’m Hannah — Chloe’s oldest
friend. “Oldest” does a lot of work there, because we’ve known each other since we were seven,
and that means I remember every phase she would very much like the rest of you to forget.
I remember the summer we built a clubhouse out of sofa cushions and voted unanimously that no boys
were allowed inside. I remember the two weeks she was positive she was going to grow up to be a
professional dolphin trainer. And I remember the night before our first day of high school, when she
showed up at my door in tears — clutching the craft scissors she had used on her own bangs.
So when Chloe first told me about Daniel — and she told me an enormous amount about him long
before I ever met him — I was skeptical. Not of Daniel, exactly. But Chloe has always thrown herself
into things completely: causes, obsessions and, apparently, men she met at a dog park.
Then I met him. And here is the thing about Daniel: he laughs at her jokes, even the ones that don’t quite
land. He lets her take the last fry without a word. And when she talks about the things she really cares
about, he listens — actually listens. And I thought: this one is different. This one gets it.
Watching Chloe with Daniel has been one of the great joys of my life, because I finally get to see what I
always hoped she would find — somebody who loves her exactly as she is, early mornings and craft-
scissor bangs included.
Daniel, welcome to the family. Literally — her mother has already added you to the group chat.
Chloe, I love you. I am so proud of the person you have become, and I am so happy that you found
your person.
So please, everyone — stand up, and raise your glasses.
