❦
ood evening, everyone. For those who don’t know me, I’m David Callahan —
Emily’s father. On behalf of Rachel and our whole family: welcome. Thank
you for being here, and thank you for the part each of you has played in the
person my daughter has become.
I’ve been dreading this moment for twenty-seven years — not because I’m
nervous, but because I knew the day would come when I’d have to share her.
Emily has always known exactly what she wanted. At six, standing on our kitchen
counter, she announced she would only marry a boy who could make her laugh
during a thunderstorm. At fourteen, she planned her cousin’s birthday party with
a clipboard and a color-coded schedule. So when she came home four years ago
and told us she’d met someone, Rachel and I exchanged a look that said:
And then we met Marcus. I spent the first hour doing what fathers do —
watching, and saying very little. I watched him let Emily win the argument about
Chicago pizza, even though he was clearly right. I watched him stand up and
make her tea without being asked, setting the mug down beside her exactly the
way she likes it. And I watched the way he looked at her when he thought no one
was looking — like she was the answer to a question he hadn’t yet learned to ask.
Marcus, thank you. Thank you for loving our daughter the way we do — patiently,
completely, and without condition. Thank you for the way you make her laugh in
her own kitchen, and for being the steady hand she reaches for.
