Good evening, everyone. For those I haven’t met, I’m Sarah Whitfield — Elena’s
professor, her thesis advisor, and, for eight years, her friend.
I first met Elena at nineteen, in the second row of my lecture hall. She asked a
question that stopped me mid-sentence — and then apologized for asking it. That
is Elena: brilliant, endlessly curious, and convinced she must earn a room she has
always lit up.
I watched her become a woman who defends her ideas with grace and makes
everyone at the table feel seen. Then came Matthew. She arrived at my office to
discuss her thesis and spent forty minutes telling me about a man who
remembered she prefers oat milk and actually listened to her answers. I told her,
“You don’t need my advice on that paper. Hold on to him.” She did.
Matthew, thank you for loving Elena the way she deserves — warmly, steadily,
without hesitation.
Elena and Matthew, you are my favorite story. May your arguments be brief, your
laughter be loud, and your ordinary Tuesdays feel like celebrations.
