ood evening, everyone. For those who haven’t met me, I’m Rachel — Daniel’s older sister, and the person
responsible for teaching him everything he knows. He will deny that, but the record stands.
When Daniel first told me about Emma, he did that thing he always does when something has started to
matter: he played it cool. “She’s just someone I’ve been seeing,” he said. “No big deal.” Three weeks later,
he asked if she could come to Thanksgiving. My mother and I exchanged one look that said everything.
That night, I watched my brother in a way I hadn’t in years. He kept her glass full, laughed at her
jokes a beat before she finished them, and kept glancing at her like he couldn’t quite believe she was
real. Somewhere between the turkey and the pecan pie, I understood. Daniel wasn’t just in love — he
was home.
Emma, since then I’ve watched love do a quiet, wonderful thing. Daniel listens now — actually listens. He
calls our grandmother every Sunday without being reminded. A year ago he couldn’t fold a fitted sheet;
today he has strong opinions about throw pillows. That is not the brother I grew up with. That is the man
you helped him become, and I will be grateful to you for that for the rest of my life.
You two make sense in a way that is rare. You finish each other’s sentences, bicker in the produce aisle and
hold hands on the way out, and you share a private language of small jokes the rest of us are not invited
to. Daniel has always made our family laugh. With you, he finally has someone to laugh with.
So welcome to our family, Emma — officially now, though you have been the best thing in it for a while.
May you always have what you have tonight: more laughter than worry, more patience than pride, and a
love that only grows kinder with every year.
Please raise your glasses with me — to my brother and my new sister.
