Jake Callahan
— COLLEGE ROOMMATE OF THE GROOM
Good evening, everyone. For those I haven’t met, I’m Jake Callahan. Dan and I were roommates for three of our
four years at Michigan — which means I have seen him through more questionable decisions than anyone else in
this room. I have the water-stained futon to prove it.
So when Dan started talking about “this girl in his economics seminar,” I paid attention. Daniel Morrison once
described brunch as “an inefficient use of a productive morning.” A passing mention was not his style. This was
different — this was the voice of a man who had started making his bed.
The first time I met Priya was a Tuesday in October of our senior year. Dan invited her over to study. They
studied — I checked — for roughly twenty minutes. Somewhere past the forty-minute mark, I walked into the
kitchen and found them side by side, notebooks open, smiling like absolute idiots. The kind of happy that makes
you text your group chat immediately. So I did. “Dan is done for.”
And he was — in the absolute best way possible.
Priya, you should know what you signed up for. Dan writes down his parking spot so he won’t forget where the
car is, and then loses the paper. He spends forty minutes choosing dinner and eats half of yours anyway. But
through thirteen years of friendship — late study nights, questionable road trips, every one of his “life plans” —
Dan has shown up for the people he loves, every single time.
And Dan — look at what Priya has done to you. The man who once planned a weekend around football and
leftovers now keeps a calendar, volunteers to be the designated driver, and has opinions about throw pillows. I did
not think that was biologically possible.
But here is what I love most about the two of you. You pick different movies and hold hands through the credits
anyway. You root for each other — not competitively, but completely. Together, you make everyone around you
believe in timing: that two people can walk into a kitchen on an ordinary October night and quietly, absolutely, get
it right.
My only advice comes from Dan’s grandmother, who said it to us at a tailgate years ago — “Be kind to each other, even
on a Tuesday.”
So Dan. Priya. May your Tuesdays be many, and may every one of them feel like that October night.
To Dan
&
Priya —
shared french fries, lost parking tickets,
and a love you can’t fake.
To my two favorite people.
Cheers.
