Daniel
&
Sophie
Saturday, the Fourth of October · Dripping Springs, Texas
Good evening, everyone. For those I haven’t met — I’m Daniel, the one who somehow convinced Sophie to say yes.
Before anything else, I want to thank our families.
Mom and Dad
— thank you for the countless quiet sacrifices I only
recognized much later. Everything good in me, you put there.
Greg and Linda
— thank you for raising a daughter with
so much warmth, and for welcoming me as your own from the very first dinner. I intend to spend the rest of my life
proving I deserve both.
And to our friends — some of you crossed oceans and time zones to be here tonight. Thank you for being the family we
chose along the way.
— Pause. Smile at Sophie. —
I met Sophie seven years ago on a rainy Tuesday. She asked if the seat across from me was taken. It wasn’t. An hour
later, neither of us had opened our laptops — and somewhere in that conversation, I knew something quiet and
permanent had just begun.
Sophie laughs at her own jokes before she finishes them. She cries at dog commercials. She steals pens from nice
restaurants, then feels guilty and leaves them for the next person to find. She is the first person I want to call with
good news, and the only person whose opinion can actually change my mind.
For seven years, she has been my loudest cheerleader on the good days, and my calm on the hard ones. Standing here
today, I don’t feel nervous — because the only thing that truly mattered was already waiting for me at the end of the
aisle.
So, if you would, please raise your glass with me.
To our families, and to the new one we become tonight. To our friends, who fill this room with love. And to
Sophie
—
my best friend, my home, and for the rest of my life, my wife.
TO
US
.
— all glasses raised —
