1. The MongoDB Document Model

MongoDB stores data as BSON documents organized into collections. Documents can contain nested documents and

arrays, allowing related information to be represented together.

2. Set Up MongoDB and Atlas

MongoDB can be used locally or through MongoDB Atlas. Atlas provides managed cloud deployments and a guided setup

path.

Atlas setup

1. Create or sign in.

Create an Atlas organization and project if needed.

2. Create a deployment.

For learning or proof-of-concept work, use an available Free cluster when appropriate.

3. Create a database user.

Use a secure username and password.

4. Configure network access.

Add your current IP address or another appropriate entry to the project IP access list.

5. Connect.

Use mongosh, Compass, or an official MongoDB driver.

3. CRUD Operations

CRUD is the foundation of application interaction with MongoDB. Common shell methods include insertOne(), find(),

4. Schema Design: Embedding vs. References

The choice between embedding and references should follow application workload. Consider which data is commonly read

together, which data changes independently, and whether duplication is acceptable.

Embedding is useful when related information is commonly retrieved together and fits the document’s size and update

requirements.

5. Indexes and Query Performance

Indexes can let MongoDB locate relevant documents without scanning every document. They can improve reads, but each

index also adds write and storage overhead.

7. Atlas Connections and Application Drivers

A typical Atlas connection requires a deployment, database user, network access configuration, and a supported client.

1. Open the deployment.

Select the database deployment in the Atlas project.

2. Select Connect.

Choose mongosh, Compass or a driver.

3. Configure security.

Confirm database user and allowed network source.

4. Copy the URI.

Use the connection string generated by Atlas.

Keep real passwords and connection strings outside source code. Use environment variables or an appropriate

For bulk or migration workflows, MongoDB provides tools such as mongoimport and mongorestore. Application traffic

should use an appropriate official driver.
