UNITEDHEALTH GROUP | DUAL-ENGINE FLYWHEEL SALES PLAN
2
01 Executive Sales Architecture
The sales system is organized around account expansion, integrated capabilities and
disciplined economics.
Commercial thesis
Lead with the customer problem, not the product
catalog. Enterprise, employer and public-sector
accounts can be developed around affordability,
access, care navigation, pharmacy value, data and
operational simplification.
Two-engine motion
UnitedHealthcare provides health-benefit
relationships across commercial, Medicare and
Medicaid markets. Optum provides care delivery,
pharmacy and technology/data capabilities. The
planning model uses the relationship created by one
engine to identify relevant needs served by the
other.
Economic discipline
Pricing, medical-cost trends, utilization, benefit
design and contract economics remain central to
profitable growth. Public reporting shows
UnitedHealthcare’s 2025 operating margin was
2.7%, illustrating why growth planning must be
paired with underwriting and cost discipline.
Account expansion logic
Account teams map the customer’s benefit, care,
pharmacy and data needs; sequence the
appropriate capabilities; establish measurable
value; and use renewal planning to deepen the
relationship.
