Amazon Climate Pledge Memo
1. PURPOSE AND STRATEGIC IMPERATIVE
In 2019, Amazon co-founded The Climate Pledge alongside Global Optimism, committing to reach net-zero carbon
across our entire enterprise by 2040
—
a full ten years ahead of the Paris Agreement. As Earth's most customer-centric
company, our global logistics and technological footprint creates a direct obligation to lead in commercial
decarbonization and corporate sustainability.
This
Amazon Climate Pledge Memo
establishes mandatory operational directives, capital deployment milestones,
and cross-divisional accountability frameworks governing Amazon Worldwide Operations, Amazon Web Services
(AWS), and Physical Stores.
2. THREE FOUNDATIONAL PILLARS OF THE CLIMATE PLEDGE
Every signatory to The Climate Pledge, led by Amazon, commits to three core non-negotiable operational principles:
Regular Measurement and Reporting:
Comprehensive accounting and independent auditing of Scope 1, Scope 2,
and Scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions, published annually through our veri
fi
ed Sustainability Report.
Direct Business Decarbonization:
Eliminating emissions through foundational operational transformation,
including a 100% renewable electricity transition, electric delivery vehicle deployment, and structural packaging
reduction.
Credible Carbon Neutralization:
Quanti
fi
able, permanent, and socially bene
fi
cial carbon offsets and removals
utilized strictly for remaining unavoidable emissions.
Executive Mandate:
We do not wait for green technologies to mature; we invent, invest, and scale them ourselves.
Decarbonizing our logistics and cloud infrastructure is a fundamental business imperative that drives long-term
customer value.
3. RENEWABLE ENERGY ACCELERATION
Amazon is the largest corporate buyer of renewable energy in the world. Having reached our target of powering 100%
of global operations with renewable electricity years ahead of our initial 2030 goal, all AWS data center regions and
ful
fi
llment nodes must maintain direct power purchase agreements (PPAs) and localized clean grid investments.
