The Use of Notes: History and Meaning

The use of notes or note-taking has long been a method used in early times. It has been highly regarded as an important part of human history and development.

Ancient Greeks kept notes for personal records on different important subjects. Note template taking or the use of notes is regarded as a complex human behavior relating to the management of information and the interaction between other functions.

The Promissory Note

One of the earliest notes used during the Tang dynasty (618–907) of China was the promissory note. Such notes were referred then as flying cash (or “feiqian”) and used by merchants to be exchanged for hard currency at provincial capitals. This concept was introduced by Marco Polo to Europe in 1325.

Promissory notes are very much different from common IOUs since they contain particulars in payment, timeline for repayment, and penalties in not doing so.

Importance of Note Taking

Most of us have viewed note taking as a method or tool in recording our understanding of something. But is it all there is to it? Note taking is a vital skill that every person needs to develop to aid in the journey that is life.

Why, you say?

  • Learning – Thank you Note taking is considered to be one of the three basic avenues for learning. The first two being visual and hearing, and literal hands-on learning, like note taking, is the third. Knowledge growth and retention is gained through observation and listening then writing down what is understood or interpreted. This is effectively called active learning.
  • Records – Through note taking, one is able to preserve what has been understood or learned. They can be used as reference later on, in case there may be a need in dealing with a similar issue in the future. Not all of us have photographic memories and memories do fade with age or time.
  • Organization – Being able to develop good note taking skills effectively allows an individual to organize not only notes but other areas as well. Individuals form a better understanding of a concept or event through the aid of notes. Meetings and other events are easily remembered with the use of notes and conducting speeches have been made easier with the help of notes containing bullet points intended as reminder for points in the topic.

However one tries to use notes, they definitely and greatly help us in the execution and improvement of everyday tasks that somehow limit us mentally and are great reminder tools in keeping us on time and on sample schedule with the activities lined up for work.

Benefits of Effective Note Taking

Blank note taking keeps you actively involved in any discussion and prevents your mind from drifting off to Never Land by keeping you alert.

They highlight important points in a discussion and keeps the flow of information organized.

A review on the notes taken after the meeting would aid in the better understanding of some points not essentially clear during the meeting or discussion.

Note template taking keeps your mind focused on what is being discussed while your mind is actively making decisions on key points of the discussion. This helps develop the mind in active thinking which is useful in making quick and sound decisions whenever it matters.

Taking notes effectively produces notes that can be made as great reference material in cases where a similar occurrence or subject may become an issue. It could also serve as an actual log that can be used whenever following up regarding any commitments made during the discussion or after a discussion.
