I teach Career and Technical Education with the belief that students learn most deeply when academic
knowledge, technical skill, and meaningful work are connected. CTE should give students opportunities to
explore careers and develop the competencies needed for further education, employment, and continued
training. My role is to make the connection between classroom learning and the world of work visible while
making sure students understand the reasoning behind a task, not just the steps for completing it.
I organize instruction around authentic career and technical problems. The exact work depends on the
program area, but students may interpret a work order, plan a project, use specialized equipment or
software, analyze information, produce a product, provide a service, troubleshoot a problem, or
communicate with a client. I introduce the technical knowledge and safety expectations first, demonstrate
important processes, and then give students supervised opportunities to practice. As competence grows, I
reduce the amount of step-by-step direction and expect students to make more of the decisions involved
in completing the work.
Work-based learning is an important bridge between school and employment. I use guest professionals,
workplace examples, job-site simulations, school-based enterprises, career exploration, and other
appropriate experiences to help students understand how technical skills are used outside school. When
students participate in a work-based learning experience, I want the experience connected to clear
learning objectives and career goals rather than functioning as an isolated visit. Students should be able
to identify what they observed, what they practiced, and what they still need to learn.
I believe CTE requires both hands-on learning and explicit instruction. Students need accurate technical
vocabulary, background concepts, mathematics, literacy, digital skills, and safety knowledge to perform
occupational tasks responsibly. I use demonstrations, visual instructions, worked examples, guided
practice, project-based learning, troubleshooting, and realistic scenarios. I then ask students to explain
their choices, compare methods, and apply skills in less familiar situations so that they develop
transferable competence rather than dependence on one memorized procedure.
Safety and professional practice are part of the learning itself. Depending on the program, students may
need to manage tools, machinery, materials, chemicals, equipment, customer information, food, clinical
procedures, or digital systems. I teach students to identify hazards, follow appropriate procedures,
maintain an organized workspace, and stop when they are unsure about a safe course of action. I also
emphasize professional habits such as punctuality, preparation, communication, documentation, care of
shared resources, and honest reporting of errors because technical ability without professional
responsibility is incomplete preparation for work.
Assessment in CTE should show demonstrated competence. I use observation, practical demonstrations,
skills checklists, project milestones, troubleshooting tasks, technical documentation, presentations,
portfolios, and knowledge checks as appropriate to the program. Before students begin a task, I make the
criteria for quality, safety, and professional performance clear. Feedback is specific and timely, and
students have opportunities to improve because competence is often developed through repeated
practice and correction rather than one attempt.

I want students to understand the relationship between technical skills and academic skills. Reading a
specification, calculating material quantities, interpreting data, writing an email, explaining a process,
creating a budget, or documenting a repair can all be part of skilled work. I make those connections
explicit so students do not see academics and technical education as competing paths. The goal is to help
students use reading, writing, mathematics, science, technology, and problem solving when the
occupation requires them.
Inclusion is central to my practice. CTE programs bring together students with different prior experiences,
learning needs, career interests, languages, and access to tools or technology outside school. I use
demonstrations, visual supports, structured practice, adapted materials or equipment when appropriate,
and flexible ways to prepare for complex tasks. I maintain meaningful performance expectations while
providing the support students need to reach them. I also make an effort to ensure that career pathways
are open to students who may not traditionally see themselves represented in a particular field.
I maintain relationships with employers, industry professionals, school counselors, families, and other
educators because CTE should remain connected to changing career pathways. Industry input can help
me review equipment, software, technical practices, employability expectations, and opportunities for
work-based learning. At the same time, I do not want instruction to become narrow training for one
employer. I teach underlying principles and transferable skills so students can adapt when technologies,
standards, workplaces, or job requirements change.
Ultimately, I want students to leave CTE with a realistic understanding of what it means to become
capable in a field. They should be able to approach a task safely, apply technical and academic
knowledge, troubleshoot, communicate professionally, evaluate the quality of their work, respond to
feedback, and identify a sensible next step in their education or career pathway. Some students will enter
employment, while others will continue into apprenticeships, technical colleges, community colleges,
universities, military pathways, or further industry training. I want the CTE classroom to prepare them for
all of those possibilities. I also treat my teaching as a form of continuous improvement by studying student
performance, listening to industry partners, reviewing work-based learning experiences, and adjusting
instruction so students have more opportunities to practice authentic, current, and transferable skills.
